South Indian Tomato Rice / Thakkali Sadam is an easy to make South Indian dish. This recipe is a great way to enjoy your extra tomatoes to make a delicious lunch or dinner. This Tomato Rice is truly flavorful because it is mixed with chopped tomatoes, shallots, and masalas; so it really absorbs all of those delicious additional flavors. I have a bite-sized 2-minute video to show you how to make this South Indian Tomato Rice / Thakkali Sadam.

Ingredients

  • Tomato – 1, chopped
  • Shallots – 4, sliced
  • Ginger – 1 tsp, chopped
  • Garlic – 1 tsp, chopped
  • Green chili – 2, slits
  • Red chili powder -1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala – 1/4 tsp
  • Cashewnuts – 10, whole
  • Coriander leaves (cilantro) – 1/4 cup, chopped
  • Salt – To taste

For Rice

  • Basmati rice – 1 cup
  • Water – 1½ cup
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Oil – 1 tsp

To Temper

  • Ghee/ Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tbsp
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Asafoetida (Hing) – A pinch

Directions

  1. Wash and soak the basmati rice for 30 minutes in enough water.
  2. Boil water in a deep bottomed pan, and add salt and oil. Once it starts to boil, drain the soaked rice, and add it to the boiled water. Close it with a lid and allow it to cook.
  3. Once it gets cooked, open the lid and loosen the rice with a spoon to allow it to cool quickly.
  4. Heat oil in a pan, add items given under ‘To temper’ to it. Once it turns golden brown, add shallots and sauté till it turns translucent. Add green chili, ginger, garlic and stir it till the raw smell goes away.
  5. Add cashews, fry it for a minute, and add tomatoes and cook it till it turns mushy. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt and cook it all till the raw smell goes away.
  6. Add the cooked rice and mix it well. Garnish it with coriander leaves (cilantro) and mix it again.

South Indian Tomato Rice / Thakkali Sadam. Serve it with Pickle, Papad, and Raita.

Notes

  1. Add red chili powder according to your desired spice level.
